MCantu “The blog-for-clicks style title certainly captures attention, but belies the treasure trove of tea knowledge in the pages, backed up by a dense list of sources. This book is an excellently written and easily read short course in the properties, effects, and uses of tea of all kinds, with lovely recipes and tantalizing detailed descriptions of all the different iterations of Camellia sinensis. While the focus is, obviously, on cancer prevention, myriad health benefits are covered – and in a way that makes the daily ritual of tea seem attractive and doable.
As for the language some other reviewers complain about, I was confused because I couldn’t remember anything terrible. I flipped back through and, unless I missed something, I found a “sucks”, a “sneaky b*stard” (accurate description of cancer, I believe), a lighthearted “steep your own d*mn tea”, and a “bad*ss”. Oh, and I guess a chapter titled “give cancer the finger”, if you consider that bad language. Unless your ten year old enjoys some light reading about polyphenols (good for them!), it’s not anything a normally socialized adult would really notice.”
Charlie Cain “The real world case for this insightful book is summed up best in this quote from Chapter 1: “One well-referenced study from The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center points out that since only 5–10 percent of all cancer cases can be attributed to genetic predisposition that the remaining 90–95 percent have their roots in lifestyle and environment. That’s downright mind-blowing, isn’t it? The onset of the cancer monster, which is responsible for one in every four deaths in the U.S., can be prevented. Why isn’t everyone standing in line for that?”
Starting with that powerful and sobering premise, Maria takes the reader on a journey through the world of tea; from science to tradition, with stops along the way to understand where the benefits come from and how best to enjoy this incredible beverage. The writing is personal, accessible and easily digestible, just like her tea.
Cancer Hates Tea is a great primer for anyone seeking to better understand their own physiology and take better control over their own health and wellness.”
Kristin “As the other reviewers have noted, this is a beautiful book, packed with helpful information that’s presented in a relaxed, congenial style. It’s also a focused but thorough reference for sorting through varieties of white, green, matcha, oolong, black, and pu-erh tea. The short descriptions on pp.152-161 provide flavor profiles and brewing tips for many varietals. I’ve long been mystified by all the different types of green tea, and this is the clearest information I’ve found. I also appreciated the hot and cold brewing instructions, which are clearly written with loving care.
The recipes are great too—the book has three versions of chai to make with your own spices, and some inspired breakfast recipes. In addition, I can vouch for the matcha pesto—it’s innovative and yummy! Both epicureans and picky eaters could love it.
