quick comparison of CCP contributors + missing history of CPB
July 24, 2016

In order to quickly compare the 4th edition (2016) to the 3rd edition (2008), I thought it would be interesting to look at the list of CCP contributors and their locations. Here is the result of that:

3rd edition (2008) — 8 perfusionists — from Oregon (2), Pennsylvania (2), Texas, Illinois, California; Australia
4th edition (2016) — 10 perfusionists — from Texas (4), Massachusetts (2), Michigan, North Carolina, California; Greece (RN)

Two are in common to both editions. Of course, this says nothing about the book itself, or the quality of information contained therein, but it is interesting to note that some of the major centers are not represented (such as those in Ohio, Minnesota, Maryland).

Also of note, the introductory chapters on the History of CPB are completely missing in the 2016 version. They haven’t just been changed/reduced as indicated in the table of contents below — they are actually not even present in the book! The book begins with Chapter 2 on page 19.

3rd edition (2008)
Section I: History
— Ch. 1 – Historical Development of Cardiopulmonary Bypass in Minnesota, by C. Walton Lillehei
— Ch. 2 – The Birth of an Idea and the Development of Cardiopulmonary Bypass, by Harris B. Shumacker
Section 2: Equipment
— Ch. 3 – Blood Pumps in Cardiopulmonary Bypass
— etc.

4th edition (2016)
Section I: History
— Ch. 1 – Development of Cardiopulmonary Bypass, by Larry W. Stephenson and Frank A. Baciewicz, Jr.
Section II: Equipment
— Ch. 2 – Blood Pumps, Circuitry, and Cannulation Techniques in Cardiopulmonary Bypass
— etc.

Structured, thorough, easy to read, summary and the end makes memorising the facts easy. Used the book for filling the gaps on that specific matter initially, but helped also a lot in understanding physiology of the heart.
