This is my first Don Winslow novel. It certainly won’t be my last.

“City on Fire” is a novel about organized crime that is as hard-hitting, and entertaining as “The Godfather,” “The Departed,” and “The Sopranos.”

The year is 1986. The place is Providence, Rhode Island. For years, the Italian and Irish crime organizations have been at peace, each content with its “piece of the action.” But now, the bosses are getting older and some of the younger men on both sides see opportunities to expand their influence, opportunities that lead to a violent war testing loyalties.

Winslow’s prose comes straight from the streets, with all its vernacular. So do his characters. Some are tough and wily with hidden objectives. Others are prideful and angry and tough to control. All of them are interesting—even compelling. That, along with the Rhode Island/New England setting, not to mention the descriptions of its sociology, causes the pages to turn quickly.

If you like novels about organized crime, this is one not to miss.

Don Winslow Runs Out of Steam

When this book showed up I was really excited. I grabbed a drink, some snacks and settled into my chair. After 100 pages I was starting to labor. The story wasn’t great, the characters were paper thin, and I couldn’t really figure out where we were going. I even flipped the book over to see the cover thinking that another author was on the cover and I just saw Winslow and made the purchase.

After 200 pages I was at a dead stop. This book isn’t that good. It hasn’t grabbed me like Winslow’s other books. It is so jarring. To go from books I couldn’t put down to a book I was laboring to read. What happened?

On another note (not the authors fault) the book was printed and cut weirdly. I have about 15 pages that the top margins are half the normal size and the right edge is uneven. Something happened when they cut those pages that was way off.

This was disappointing – Winslow’s other book were so amazing…..

Time to Go to the Mattresses

It’s time to go to the mattresses.

“City of Fire” stays true to its crime family roots and delivers what it advertises. With a nod to the Illiad’s Helen of Troy, a gang war is sparked when a beautiful “goddess” walks out of the sea and the world explodes between the Irish and Italians controlling Providence, Rhode Island… Dogtown. Danny Ryan first appears as a forgotten member of the Irish mob, an afterthought pretty much in place because his old man used to run things. As things get hotter and the casualties mount, he reluctantly finds himself asserting more control and leadership. While the outline seems like pretty standard gangster fare, the story never stops taking interesting twists and turns. Just when you think one side has quashed the other, everything flips. Don Winslow is a master and knows how to keep the action going.

While an exciting ride, this is not for everyone. There is some racist and homophobic content– this is the criminal underworld, after all. Also, once Pam walks out of the sea there is not much more any female really contributes, other than playing spouses or victims. “City of Fire ” is apparently the first part of a trilogy and hopefully we will see the women play more integral roles.

Overall, this is great storytelling and I will be looking forward to where things go from here. I mean, you had to see Godfather II as well, right? I received an advance review copy for free (an offer I could not refuse), and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

VINE VOICE
Organized crime from a different perspective
April 26, 2022
calls this a financial thriller which seems an odd classification. A much more descriptive term would be “Crime Families,” because money and deal making in this book are ways of keeping score, but it sure isn’t the whole story. If you were engrossed by The Godfather trilogy, this is the book for you. And like The Godfather, this is only the beginning of the story.
When I went to college in Providence, R.I. many years ago, it was common knowledge that crime syndicates were active in this rather down-at-it’s-heels New England city. We used to wonder if the neighborhood diners we frequented were giving a cut to the mob.
If City on Fire is to be believed, Providence still had a strong but uneasy understanding between the Irish and the Italian gangs dividing up the various rackets. in the 1980’s when this story begins, This volume follows Danny Ryan and his place in the Irish power structure. Winslow begins by setting the stage for Danny and his friends and family in the nostalgic days of summer when life seemed predictable and good. Beginning slowly, Winslow takes the time to create a world with the most authentic voices. Once he has introduced you to this some what shabby Garden of Eden, he invites in the serpent in the form of a beautiful young woman from the WASP world of Greenwich, CT. Danny immediately recognizes her as trouble and from almost the first moment, honor and respect color every action that follows.
I can’t say I followed every move and countermove, but the tension, the danger, the double and triple crosses will keep you reading to the end. Which, of course, is not really the end at all. So the big question is, When do we get Book 2?

No one, and I mean no one, loves Don Winslow more than I.

I own every book he has ever written. I browbeat people into reading The Force, which I consider the best novel written since The Passage.

The guy is a genius. Unfortunately he laid back on his talent with this one.

The plot is confusing and forced- he never builds the power and fear he does in his other books.

Very, very confusing plot.

Central characters : there are maybe ten. Five of them have the following names:

Paulie
Peter
Pasco
Pat
Pam

You need a notecard to keep track of who is on which side.

Formulaic, easy, soft, poorly thought out. Don Winslow could write this book in his sleep….and it appears he did.
