Clitoral Anatomy MISSING

The course of nerves and vessels in the clitoris was omitted again from this textbook despite my entreaties to Susan Standring to include it.

Illustrations of the anatomy missing are shown, next to Figure 77.4 from Gray’s. As you can see, the dorsal nerves are shown terminating prior to the clitoris. Imagine only showing the course of the dorsal nerves prior to the penis and not in the penis itself.

The dorsal nerves of the clitoris are 2.0-3.2 mm in diameter along their course in the clitoral body. They are just as large as the dorsal nerves in the penis, which are shown in Gray’s Anatomy. No other nerves as large or important are omitted from this textbook. Omitting the course of the dorsal nerves in the clitoris is just blatant misogyny.

Many doctors may believe this is not important or maybe they’re just uncomfortable, as the clitoris has no direct reproductive role. But many real women are suffering preventable genital mutilation and loss of sensation and ability to orgasm because surgeons are operating blind to basic anatomy. This is not acceptable.

The clitoris merits the same depth of coverage as any other organ. Please choose other textbooks that cover female anatomy more equitably, like Netter and Grant. Future editions of Netter, Grant, and Moore will be even better, as their editors have had new plates made for the clitoris.

Ho acquistato il testo dopo essermi laureato ed aver iniziato a lavorare come medico, anche perché ho cominciato ad insegnare anatomia, quindi ho voluto allargare la base dei miei testi di riferimento.
Personalmente, non consiglierei questo libro per la preparazione dell’esame universitario, dacché è molto più orientato sull’anatomia applicata alla clinica piuttosto che alla materia da conoscere ai fini dell’esame.
Tuttavia, la qualità delle descrizioni, i continui collegamenti alla pratica medica quotidiana, la qualità mozzafiato delle illustrazioni rendono quest’ultima edizione del Gray quasi un must-have per il medico che sia interessato a riprendere concetti che, inevitabilmente, si sono smarriti con l’andare degli anni (in genere, al momento della laurea sono trascorsi circa 4 anni dall’esame di anatomia, ergo si sono persi moltissimi concetti).
Rileggere, rivedere, riprendere concetti anatomici che s’è studiati anni prima, nell’ottica offerta dal Gray, è assai utile e concreto.
La elegante rilegatura e l’ottima qualità della carta, oltreché l’eccellente qualità della prosa (che molti Autori italiani oggettivamente non hanno), ne rendono la lettura piacevole e scorrevole.
Ottimi, infine, anche i contenuti online, tra cui diversi video di dissezioni anatomiche.
