Features of Every Last Cuckoo PDF By Kate Maloy

Sarah Lucas imagined the rest of her days would be spent living peacefully in her rural Vermont home in the steadfast company of her husband. But now, with Charles’s sudden passing, seventy-five-year-old Sarah is left inconsolably alone. Every Last Cuckoo PDF By Kate Maloy

As grief settles in, Sarah’s mind lingers on her past: her imperfect but devoted fifty-year marriage to Charles; the years they spent raising their three very different children; and her childhood during the Great Depression, when her parents opened their home to countless relatives and neighbors. So, when a variety of lost souls come seeking shelter in Sarah’s own big, empty home, her past comes full circle. As this unruly flock forms a family of sorts, they—with Sarah—nurture and protect one another, all the while discovering their unsuspected strengths and courage.

In the tradition of Jane Smiley and Sue Miller, Kate Maloy has crafted a wise and gratifying novel about a woman who gracefully accepts a surprising new role just when she thought her best years were behind her.

Wonderful!

As a woman of a certain age, a widow, with grown children and growing grandchildren, this was exactly the story I wanted to read. Perhaps, this is also the story I needed to read; to remember that the pain and losses of life should never become the focus of our lives. This book had me laughing and crying, bringing memories back, all for the good. It was a reminder that I am still part of the fabric of family and life, with stories and gifts to share. Ms. Maloy has a definite talent for story telling. I am looking forward to more stories from her.

This was a delightful book! I highly recommend it — especially for older adults. I did find it strange that the back cover mentions a life event that actually doesn’t occur in the book until about halfway through reading. I would have preferred not knowing until it happens. I also couldn’t figure out the book title until way into the story but it ends up being the perfect title.

A story from the Grandmother’s point of view!

Most stories about older people are written by people who are not yet old. They are full of standard phrases and generalities about getting old and what it means. I know nothing about Kate Maloy as I write this but as an experienced reader with a few decades of experience I feel this is a fresher account on aging and living life to its fullest than I have ever seen. Our main character starts the book at 75 years old and it is a tale of a couple that “took care of themselves,” raised a family the best they could and continued to grow and change throughout their lives. It is about re-evaluation of our choices and actions and how we don’t have to continue on the same path just because we have lived long enough to be considered “old”… Change and opportunities still exist.

if you are young, old or just in between read this book. The description of how the author sees her characters makes you feel as if you know them. It might make you look at a different point of view from your own and say Maybe.

A lovely story of an interesting woman & her family.

Kate Maloy’s debut novel is about an extremely in-depth look into a family’s life. Their commitment towards one another, their growth, interactions and sorrows & joys. Headed by their matriarch, Sarah, after the death of her husband, Charles, Sarah must learn how to move on. This is an engrossing tale, very well-written and edited. A delight to read, five stars.

Every last cuckoo

This well written story could have been called ‘No (wo)man is an island’. The main character Sarah deals with grief at the loss of her husband, sadness at poor relations with some of her children, and other human relationships. She is brought back into the community, as it were, when various people and teenagers need to stay with her during times of crisis in their lives. Sarah is reabsorbed into their lives and learns to deal with the problems, both her own and those of the others. All the new residents come from very different backgrounds, and learn many useful lessons along the way. An absorbing book with lyrical descriptions of Vermont countryside in all seasons. An enriching read.
