Excellent review of the basics

I should first clarify that I read this book for personal interest, not as a medical student, so I’m not really part of the target audience.

I was attracted to the book because of the “high-yield” part of the title. I was seeking a book which very concisely and clearly lays out the key ideas of biostatistics, without getting bogged down by overexplanation or esoteric details, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Just beware of two limitations inherent in a book like this. First, since this is a concise review book, you need to have a basic comfort level with math in order to learn from it. Second, the focus is on the basics, so the book doesn’t cover all of the statistics you’ll encounter when reading biomedical literature.
However, within the scope of these limitations, this is certainly an excellent book which I can recommend.

Great for med school biostats

I used this to cram for my biostatistics class as an MS1, and the material is very well explained and gives nice questions at the end of each section. I am glad that I read this, and I didn’t take any formal statistics class in college other than the crash course statistics in my upper division science classes. Great read and I will see how well I am prepared for the USMLE once I take it next year~

you don’t need to go through this

I just wrote my Step 1. The ‘insignificant’ biostatistics component of the exam was either too simple or too complicated. This book has too much information. First Aid covers almost all the concepts. Just do UW and Kaplan questions and you are good to go. Spending too much time on such a low-yield subject is actually counter-productive

Excellent To-The-Point Book

This book is a great complement for any biostatistics book. Always a quick reference guide. Easy to understand with great examples. Very solid examples and graphs that are applicable to real-life public health situations. Great for use in any public health setting.

Decent supplement

It helped me with some of my test questions but I just wish it had more examples to use for practice. I really have no major complaints…I would use this text as a supplement for other books because I’m sure there are better ones available on the market.
