seth “I’m a therapist in private practice. I was really excited for this book and have followed her on instagram for a couple years. What I found in the book was pretty general information about psychological concepts that are not new, and neither is her approach. I thought there would be more depth to this book. I learned she went into a PhD program for psychology directly from undergrad directly from a privileged background. Not to say her struggles are not real, but she seems inexperienced in issues of complex trauma and oppression. Her statements about BIPOC people seem like lip service and there is an emphasis on self mastery that ignores the difficulty in doing this without the proper relational support necessary that changes our neurobiology and attachment to ourselves. I stopped reading when she endorsed intermittent fasting. I am well versed in eating disorders and fat phobia and this, consciously or not, promotes both. Overall, this seems written from the perspective of someone who over simplifies the path to healing. Some of her content I think can be helpful for people with complex trauma but I’m disturbed at how her work is imbued with unexamined privilege as well as promotes her approach as new and the answer.”

“I bought this book because I follow her Instagram. I like the premise that yoga/nutrition/integrative health can drastically improve your mental health. This isn’t new but it is interesting. I found this book to be extremely problematic. The idea is that your childhood (and only your childhood) is to blame for your mental health problems. She never discusses any other cause. (When there can be MANY.) Most of the book is blaming her parents for her mental health issues. Which gets old fast. She even states that her adverse childhood experience is a 1 out of 10. A lot of the parent archetypes discussed are based in familial programming, not so much straightforward trauma or abuse. I agree with what others have said that she is very trauma uninformed. Any book or person who claims to have the answer for every problem you have should be a giant red flag. What does she stand to gain by saying that? A lot of money. This is a manipulate sales tactic.

Also, yes she throws in a few sentences about racism almost as if it was an after the fact and needed to squeeze them in.

With that being said, this is a decent book to read as a parent so you are aware that you can literally do the best you can, have a child with an adverse childhood experience of 1 and she might still write a book about how you severely damaged her mental health.

This book is very much “victim play and blame everyone else” so if that’s not your thing buy another book. All the anecdotes/studies/ideas I found interesting from the book came from other books anyway.

Also, the work? What the entire book is named after? Is not even clearly laid out but from what I gather it’s journaling, breath work and yoga.”

HG “I know that Dr LePera’s work has been helpful to a lot of people, but I wanted to write this review to offer a different point of view from someone who has also been in the healing circle and “done the work” but still continues to suffer from the effects of chronic/complex trauma on my life. To put it simply, I believe her work exists in a space between CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and Spiritual Bypassing (google this term to clarify). The major flaw I see in her work is that she doesn’t take into account intersectionality and the different levels of trauma that not everyone will be able to “self heal” from. I actually believe for a psychologist she uses the term trauma too broadly and irresponsibly – lumping all “trauma” into one category is a very dangerous thing to do because for me personally I became so obsessed with taking responsibility for changing my life/mindset/circumstances, decided to go off my medication (something she advocates for) and “dive fully into the work.” What I realize now 2.5 years later, still depressed and anxiety-ridden (which she has responded to people who’ve come to her with this concern that they are “not working hard enough” – typical gaslighting technique), is that I actually have needed the help of a professional and medication all this time, and withdrawing from my support system around me (another thing she normalizes) was actually a dangerous thing to do. I only wised up this week after watching the royal interview and realized I do need help and I do need medication to be able to get my life together because existing in and ‘witnessing” this depression has not been productive to improving my life for the last 2.5 years. As I reflect on the last few years, I’ve really fallen into the trap of Instagram therapy and the “victim blaming” disguised as “Take responsibility!” mindset, something I am actually quite familiar with after finally gathering the courage to leave a religious cult a few years ago for the same reasons. I realize now that I just swapped out one cult for another. Please be careful with this work, and know that it’s not ALWAYS “all on you” – yes of course we need to take responsibility for our lives and heal, something I have been working hard at, but it’s okay to take medication, it’s ok to see a professional, if “the work” is not working for you, then you might actually have more chronic/complex trauma, rather than the trauma that Dr LePera mostly addresses having to do with our parents/childhood and learned behaviors (which is why I think she uses the word irresponsibly), and considering EMDR or somatic therapy might be a better option for you than this new age stuff.”
