 Gold standard of occupational diseases

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 6, 2017

When it comes to occupaitonal diseases, Hunter’s is canonical. Th huge book contains everything on traditional occupational diseases and sheds some light to new and emerging diseases too. However, it would not give you recognition criteria because that varies from country to country. It is even more “temperate” in symptoms like musculoskeletal diseases where the evidence is lower. Anyone that has to do something in occupational diseases have to own this book. It can be a good consultant for other medical specialists meeting patients who may have disorders related to their occupation. However, it may not be able to provide complete and up-to-date information and further desk research will be required.

 Straight forward and simple

Easy to ready, simple to follow. I don’t usually rate textbooks but this one deserves some credit. Each chapter begins with a hypothetical case and walks your through what to do next and then the case changes and the book does the subsequent steps again. Well done.

 Excellent except…

January 23, 2022

I love the format, the algorithms, and the way it walks the reader through the process of narrowing a differential. However, there is a glaring lack of women’s health issues included. Endometriosis effects ten percent of fertile women (and half of women who present to a gastroenterologist with abdominal pain
and diarrhea) but is never mentioned. If we want to improve the sexism baked into women’s healthcare, we need better textbooks.
