The Authors
I was born August 19, 1938, in Hollywood, CA. I was probably about five years old, but clearly remember being led down our street a block-and-a-half to Coast Highway (now, the Pacific Coast Hwy, or PCH) and the beach. A crowd stood in the night, looking in awe up the beach at the burning oil refinery at Signal Hill. A Japanese sub had lobbed shells into the refinery and set it ablaze. After that experience, the ration stamps and blackout curtains in our house took on new meaning. The war was real. They really were out there in our ocean and might come ashore on our beach one night. I did not understand it, but can remember the wild cheering in our local theater when Movie Tone News showed clips of Jimmy Doolittle’s B-25s lifting off the deck of the carrier, Hornet. Of course, we all now know the heroic story of the Tokyo Raiders. I later briefly met Jimmy Doolittle on one of his visits to the Air Force Academy. Recalling this now gives me pause. Just how young was I when the flying bug bit me?

An outstanding recap of an outstanding profession!

Jerry has penned a wonderful account of what the airline industry was like, and has evolved to. I’m so glad he wrote it. For me it was a walk down memory lane. I flew with Jerry several times at Delta both in MIA and ATL and knew and flew with most of the folks he wrote about. For the aviation buffs it’s a great reminder of who built the industry and for non-aviation types it offers an accurate portrayal of the men and women of the industry and what the did day in and day out to provide a safe and efficient ride to anywhere in the world.
Highly recommended.

The Value of Decision Making

It has often occurred to me that except for altitude and speed, aviation and harbor pilotage have much in common. Jerry’s well done book together with my last 30 pre-retirement years as a SW Alaska Harbor Pilot has reinforced this conclusion especially with regard to the art of decision making. “In the Sky” does a credible job of of using both personal and professional examples of decision making to validate the time-tested adage that “good judgement comes from experience and experience comes from poor judgement”. Today’s youth should gain encouragement from “In the Sky” especially with regard to those decisions they will face in their transit through life’s experiences.

Great read of an outstanding airline pilots career

This is a great read for anyone interested in flying with great insight into a an airline pilots long career starting with prop airliners. Some great tips shared on some skills (including some simple math) valuable to pilots, intermixed with personal insight about airline life, personal life, and some wry humor. Many stories are shared about individual flight related experiences, some funny, some very serious, and a few sad. I would rank this book right up there on par with the very popular “Fate is The Hunter”

I have read many aviation stories, this is by far the best. Jerry knows the business inside and out.
The Captain kissing the Captain had me holding my sides and wiping tears from my eyes.
It will be difficult to find another read as enjoyable as this on Kindle.

I didn’t expect much of this story when I started. I am a retired AA Captain so I have been there. Delta was a great airline before bankruptcy. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Jerry had a rewarding career. Sierra Hotel!

An articulate and sometimes hilarious account of what it is like to be both a military and airline aviator. Very captivating and brutally honest account of what it takes to get to the top as a airline captain.
