A good enough book…but know it’s limitations…
December 16, 2021
The author wrote well, but much of the book concerned details of his prewar experiences. Much of the rest of the book consisted casualty lists of comrades that fell in battle, and the war in West. The book did give valuable insight Stuka participation in the Battle of Britain, and chronicled every campaign up through the invasion of Crete, in quite a bit of detail (at least from the perspective of the author’s unit).
If you wanted to contrast and compare his experiences vs Rudel’s in Russia, you will be disappointed however. After being shot down 3 times in the first 2+ weeks of the war, the author’s narrative abruptly ends, even though he evidently served in a staff capacity in dive bomber units throughout the war in the East. The remainder of the book is a summation, not by the author, of what the unit did afterwards. I didn’t bother to finish that.
Again…not bad stuff if that is your thing, but for someone assuming a large portion of the book was a first hand account of Stuka’s fighting in the air war in Russia, I was disappointed by its abrupt ending, shortly after his last mission on July 8, 1941.

Strictly a war diary
December 11, 2021
This is one of the many publications of it’s sort to appear in the last few years, an extremely detailed log of what one man did in the war. If this story had been delivered by the author in person you would imagine a monotone voice with no excitement to it. If you are writing a research document about who flew what missions at what time of day, who their gunner was and who else was flying on the mission. This would be the book for you.
Just as you would not read the dictionary for an entertaining story you should not read this book looking for an entertaining story past the first 20% of the book.
Gave up looking for the story after a third of the book. If you’re not doing research buy at your own risk.

an excellent history…..
September 27, 2020
first was the development of the Stuka and then its gradual obsolescence and then how it found new life on the eastern front as a tank killer….. more than war, is the German soldiers their families and the society that produced them….they were patriots and they knew their nation was going to be destroyed and so it proved to be. it struck me that the Germans couldn’t believe they would be decimated and killed by the millions after the war was supposedly over. they fought to the death to get their families to safety in the west without knowing the allies had death camps and slave labor waiting for the survivors the history and Holly woods spin on it that we learned in school couldn’t be farther from the truth…. willful ignorance is not patriotism the murder of western Europe by the Atlantic powers was the result…..

Fills an Important Gap in Aviation Narratives
December 27, 2021
I’ve been reading WW2 history, especially aviation, since about 1975. In all that time, I have only seen one memoir by a Stuka pilot, and that was Hans Ulrich Rudel’s excellent *Stuka Pilot*. The only drawback to Rudel’s story was that he was a latecomer to the war and could only write about the Eastern Front.
In all of my WW2 aviation reading, Stukas have only appeared as targets in early war narratives.
Helmut Mahlke’s memoir fills the gap in that early war air combat story, and he fills that gap very well. Mahlke saw combat in France, England, Malta, North Africa, Crete, and Russia.
Great story. I highly recommend for WW2 aviation buffs.

And that would pretty much define most (lower ranking) warriors from most countries …
October 30, 2014
One 2 star reviewer writes “He doesnt seem to have any personal feelings about the war – just follow orders.”
Well… yes. And that would pretty much define most (lower ranking) warriors from most countries around the world.
Personally, I think that is one of the books strengths as any of use who entered their own military at a tender age can pretty easily relate to much of what he says. He fought for the country he loved. Who can fault him for that. If there is one thing I took away from this book its (again) the sad fact that we were in a titanic struggle with folks who were so much like us( look at his wedding photo), unlike today where we cannot begin to understand our enemies.

Insight into the mind of WW2 SGerman stuka pilot.

Look into what the German soldiers and airmen were thinking. Did they know of the Holocaust ? Did they care at that time? Led by fanatics they went down a inhuman road.

Interesting Details
August 6, 2020
Along with the detailed portrayal of Mahlke’s Stukas and their tactics, I found it extremely interesting that the author included the names of pilots who were lost and their gunners as well as their home towns. The narrative was well organized and informative. I certainly recommend this book.
