Every workplace has them. Often the needs of the people we work with can demand as much attention as the actual work we are supposed to be doing. If you have become frustrated and impatient dealing with your boss or one of your “needy” colleagues, this book is for you.

Dr. Dwyer explores six challenges that make it difficult for people to work together:

1. Lack of Emotional Control (i.e., Impatience, Anger Management, Bullying)
2. Inability or Unwillingness to Delegate
3. Poor Interpersonal Communication Skills
4. Inability or Unwillingness to Deal with Conflict
5. Tendency Toward Perfectionism
6. Difficulty in Making Decisions
He suggests that all six of these problems stem from extreme needs for control and approval. Needy People will help you understand the reasons underlying these behaviors and will fill your relational toolbox with ideas for managing these challenges.

The concepts of control and approval-seeking are central to obstructing progress in our work settings.

As a university professor who teaches leadership courses to young and mid-career professionals, I find this to be an engaging and highly accessible resource that will be useful in working with students and colleagues at all levels. All of us experience control freaks and approval-holics in our work and volunteer environments, and at times we exhibit those traits ourselves. Dwyer maintains that these two issues are central to obstructing work success. The book includes numerous assessments for personal reflection, and each chapter concludes with practical strategies gleaned from Dr. Dwyer’s extensive experience in business / human resources management. This book is going to be a valuable resource in my work mentoring young professionals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful evidence-based book!

I appreciated how effectively Dr. Dwyer engaged research studies to provide solid evidence for how to deal with needy people. And he did this in an easy-to-read way without being overly academic. His examples were spot on. The self-assessment instruments were insightful. There’s so much robust information packed into these 250+ pages–without being over-powering. Thank you, Dr. Dwyer!

 A Great Read for Everyone

This book was just what I needed. It’s a great way to learn about others and about oneself. Find out where you (and others) fall on the spectrums of needing control and approval, how those needs manifest, and how to work with that. The book is very well-written, easy to read, and keeps one’s attention. Very grateful to have found it!

Understand your needs – your colleagues’ needs – and how to improve performance

December 18, 2017

“Who’s your Chuck?” is the intriguing start that draws you into Dale Dwyer’s third book, “Needy People: Working Successfully with Control Freaks and Approval-holics.” It first reviews these two personality types In the workforce and then provides different levels of detail of value to individuals, teams and human resource professionals and other leaders. Dr. Dwyer takes you from general descriptions to individual examples, self-tests (always a scary challenge) that are useful for teams as well, suggestions for how to best deal with others with these characteristics, and concludes with a final set of challenges. The bottom line is that it’s a helpful guide for understanding and improving performance. Jack Ebeler
