Features of Outbreak 2nd Edition PDF

Outbreak 2nd Edition PDF -Outbreak: Cases in Real-World Microbiology, 2nd Edition, is the newest edition of this fascinating textbook designed for introductory microbiology students and instructors. Thoroughly revised, this collection of case studies of real-world disease outbreaks, generously illustrated in full color, offers material that directly impacts college-level students, while the book’s unique presentation offers instructors the flexibility to use it effectively in a number of ways.

More than 90 outbreak case studies, organized into six sections according to the human body system affected, illustrate the wide range of diseases caused by microbial pathogens. The studies are presented at differing levels of difficulty and can be taught at all undergraduate levels. Each case study includes questions for students to think about, discuss, and answer, and the book includes an appendix that directs students to the specific reference material on which each case was based, providing the opportunity to investigate further and to apply the reference content to the case being studied.

Each of the six sections of the book concludes with a College Perspective and a Global Perspective case study. The College Perspective provides a direct and practical link between the microbiology course and the daily lives of students. The Global Perspective connects students with outbreaks that have occurred in countries around the world to facilitate understanding of the social, religious, economic, and political values at play in the treatment and prevention of infectious disease. At the end of every section, detailed descriptions offer concise yet complete information on each disease involved in that section.

Fallen“A well structured academic book focusing upon microbiological pathogenic outbreaks around the world. The majority of outbreaks detailed here have happened in America though the science and pathology are relevant wherever the outbreak occurred so that is not detrimental to European readers. Interestingly as well there is a mixture of very localised outbreaks being examined alongside larger incidences such as ‘An outbreak of boils associated with footpaths at a nail salon – California’ or ‘A cholera outbreak in a refugee camp -DRC’
The layout has been well documented here and the subsections focused on are:
Outbreak of diseases of the respiratory tract; Outbreaks of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract; Pathogens and diseases that are transmitted sexually; Outbreaks of diseases of the skin, soft tissues and eyes; Outbreaks of diseases of the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems; Outbreaks of diseases of the nervous system.”

Lark “This is a good guide and reference for professionals, as an interested general reader I did not find it an inaccessible read but it was obvious to me that I may not have been the intended readership.

The book is structured well, with clear, concise contents, index, the text is divided well, there is good use of bullet points, headings, sub-headings and (importantly given the title of the book) real world case studies of outbreaks.

As an interested general reader I did find this interesting and informative, there was unfamiliar medical terminology, but not particularly any unnecessary jargon, I found it really interesting as I have read some more popular reads on this topic and thought they were a little shallow. Its all a million miles away from what anyone will have heard on mainstream media or press briefings or advice from medical officers.

A lot of the contagions can spread frighteningly quickly, unimpeded by even the most well co-ordinated, planned and organized responses. This book has not done anything to change my own views that response and management of outbreaks require public or social cohesion that it is often not in the gift of government or medical professions to provide.

Although, it may well be possible for government to totally ruin or scupper it by the actions or inaction of officials or key decision makers. Given that the book’s focus if often not on whether or not a response can be mustered but how rapidly, it proved a sobering read. I found it a good read, although I am interested in the topic and have read a few, less clinical, books on the topic. It is a good guide or source for clinicians, probably also academics or clinicians engaged in research.”

Wilde’s Cabbage “Course-specific 2nd edition undergrad book that looks in detail at over 90 different outbreak cases organised into 6 sections depending on the area of the body affected.

A good range of detailed colour photographs representing a mixed demographic as symptoms present themselves differently on skin colour in some situations which illustrate cases of microbial pathogens.

Aimed at course students in a textbook/workbook format with many interring questions to answer. Answers for the questions are not provided, but each section is followed by an in-depth reference guide for further research to aid study and apply the reference to the case studies.

Concise and well referenced supporting textbook that catalogues a wealth of further material whilst delivering a well structured look at microbiological case studies.”
