Do Not Read unless you want more LIFE in your life.

Rick Tamlin leaves nothing and everything on the table with this book. He invites you to explore your deeper values and your bigger WHY in life, giving you tools, strategy, and storytelling to guide you along the way. He lays out what it looks like and feels like to step into and own your bigger game. It’s simple and it’s effective.
He leaves you without answers, just questions to explore and follow. There were moments where I found myself stopping and audibly saying, “holy crap, that’s EXACTLY what’s going on… wow.”
Personally, the book –and ultimately, the Bigger Game work– taught me to always stay curious about where I am and what I’m moving toward or away from. I already knew my Bigger Game, but I wasn’t exactly sure what that meant, or what to do with it. After reading and examining where I am in my game, I feel far more equipped to make my game a reality. I know the “Gulp” moments I’ve had, and those I know are still ahead of me; I know the “Investments” I have made, make now, and will make soon enough; and I know with every fiber of my being my “Compelling Purpose” and why it’s so important to me.
Look, in life things move very quickly. We often get lost in the minutiae of our daily workings and find ourselves exhausted at the end of the day, week, year, decade, etc. The Bigger Game calls forth that part of you that wants more, or wants change, or knows that life MUST be more than just eat, sleep, work, repeat. Congrats Rick Tamlyn on finally getting this book out into the world in a “Bigger Game” way! You know that I believe strongly in the power of the bigger game as an internal operating system that we actually all have…. Instead of an 8 cylinder engine, we have a 9 square model, and we need to be firing on all 9 squares! This book helps people “get it” more consciously, even those lifelong serial “bigger game players” that didn’t have a name for what they were doing… With this book, each of us now has an operator’s manual for the human need to make a difference! This book is such a gift…
I don’t say these words lightly. I have been deeply touched and inspired by this Bigger Game Model, which was introduced to me back in 2002 by Laura Whitworth and Rick Tamlyn at an IBM coaching workshop. Actually, my coach, Sara Smith, introduced it to me even before that, when the model was more of a linear equation… Laura and Rick created the model after observing the principles that were being modeled by their coaching clients who were actually achieving “big things” in their world – beyond their individual span of control. They put handles on these operating parameters, and documented the dynamics of the model – as they saw it playing out in the real world. They revealed the (internal operating) system to the world, and to the “game player” or perhaps more accurately – the “game changer”.
Just after I learned about this model, my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, and was told that his “best chance” at a full life would likely be a stem cell transplant. He was 40 at the time, and I was pregnant with our third child. Talk about GULP! And we were flung into an entirely different game that we did NOT know how to play. And yet, we did…. Because we ALL have this internal operating system in us – whether we are conscious of it or not. We were HUNGRY to see Dan live to see his kids graduate from high school, and college, and to have kids of their own… We invested by learning everything we possibly could about the disease and the possible treatments, and where the best doctors were located. We enrolled allies – friends and neighbors – immediately – and asked for help. Help in doing this research. Emotional support. “Kid” support. And so much more. We stepped out of all kinds of comfort zones, like seeing doctors as “authority figures” with “the answers”. Like taking a new job that would lessen my work travel (and also my salary!). Like believing that I could do it “on my own”.
And at work, I began slowly to make very different decisions. I became much clearer about my personal compelling purpose, and realized that my energy for work (which was being depleted by the intense family needs at the time) came from doing work that was meaningful. That I couldn’t “NOT” do. And eventually, I came to articulate that compelling purpose in very simple terms – to model and inspire “bigger game play” as a way of life. I currently focus my professional efforts playing bigger games in the “smart cities” space. Because I hunger for a world where everyone has a chance to play “bigger”, in a world that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. That’s one “field of play”, in addition to my personal bigger games related to raising “bigger game players that are ready to joyfully and consciously make their impact in the world”.
So – if you want a life that has deep meaning and impact – play your bigger game… and let this book be another tool in your toolkit. (Note: look around! There are allies everywhere, and bigger games looking for you to step up and step in!)
