This is an interesting book that is challenging enough where you need some basic science/medical background to discuss and think about making changes to prevent heart disease. This is the type of book for someone who is concerned about a potential issue they may have, and then wants to delve into literature, the internet, doctor knowledge and spend weeks becoming informed on a subject so they can use scientific input and case studies for their decisions. Basically for the medical DIYer (besides obviously being a cursory introduction for someone considering specializing cardiology in Med School) . This is not a book for someone that isn’t extremely to educate themselves on a higher level about cardiology. I think I will probably get the latest version if I ever have a heart attack.

The book covers the history of preventative cardiology which is really interesting as a medical issue thats become more prevalent as we live longer and eat worse. I also enjoyed reading the section on special populations and the future of cardiovascular medicine.

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and one of the most complex diseases. However, life-threatening cardiac events often can be prevented through early diagnoses, risk assessment, treatment and lifestyle changes. Preventive cardiology focuses on strategies aimed at both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Risk factors for heart disease include hypertension, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), metabolic syndrome, diabetes and/or cigarette smoking. Lifestyle modifications to help reduce your risk for heart disease includes regular exercise, consuming a diet that is low in fat, reducing your salt intake, maintaining a desirable weight, reducing alcohol, and stopping smoking.

This text is directed more to the medical profession in my opinion, however several of the other reviewers consider this a good reference for the lay person wanting to learn more about cardiovascular/heart disease. I would highly recommend this text for anyone in the medical field or in nursing/medical school as it contains valuable information. Also would recommend for anyone who is really interested in learning how to manage your or your families heart disease.
