Beware—No “free” ebooks anymore!
October 9, 2019

Wolters and Kluwer clearly state that with purchase of the hardcopy version of the book you receive free access to the “interactive eBook copy.” That is a lie—it turns out, Wolters and Kluwer no longer work with the online ebook platform inkling, as stated on copies of their books being sold to this day. Instead, they have transitioned to VitalSource, a rival ebook platform. This wonderful new partnership means you no longer receive the free ebook edition. Instead, you must email an associate of Wolters Kluwer proof of your purchase of any book in order to receive 50% OFF the purchase price of the VitalSource ebook version, which for this textbook would end up being an additional $75 after this generous discount. And since you may have already scratched to reveal the code for your “free” eBook, you can no longer return the book to online store for a refund. I would recommend you look elsewhere for content, rather than purchase from a company that relies on bait and switch tactics to sell their products.

Textbook is a fine primary care reference…accessing electronic content was more challenging….UPDATED REVIEW BELOW
September 14, 2014

Textbook is a fine primary care reference but don’t count on INKLING to provide seamless interactive / electronic content…

Primary Care Medicine Seventh Edition by Goroll and Mulley is a reasonably comprehensive and clear reference source for adult primary care providers. My only complaint with the text itself is that the editors have chosen to separate screening and management for the same medical condition into different chapters which is a somewhat disjointed way to present a topic. However, my largest complaint with this text is that INKLING, the entity responsible for managing the e-content of this book is useless. I already owned the 6th edition of this book which was accessible online through Point. I bought the 7th edition not only for the updated material but also for the enhanced electronic content. However, I have been unable to access the electronic content since I purchased the text. After several calls to Wolters Kluwer customer service and the reassignment of a new redemption code, I was finally able to see the textbook in My Library. However, when I attempted to open the electronic text, I only had online access to Chapter 1. When attempting to open any other chapter, a message was displayed stating that I did NOT own the chapter and would I like to buy it…I own the whole book! Unable to find a phone number for INKLING Customer Service, I called Wolters Kluwer back. They informed me that they do not own the electronic content and that I would have to EMAIL INKLING customer service because Inkling does NOT have a phone number! They suggested that I state in my email that Wolters Kluwer has assigned a new code and all they need to do is OPEN UP ACCESS for the ENTIRE book to me. Simple enough, right? WRONG. I have emailed Inkling several times and even sent screen shots of the error message to them. They have not resolved the issue and it has been 3 days since they even responded to my emails. I hope that the editors and publishers of this text are aware that Inkling is not adequately servicing the electronic content and that this will almost certainly have a negative impact on their sales of the text.

UPDATE TO REVIEW (09/17/14): Inkling and Wolters-Kluwer have both reached out to me and we have been able to resolve the issues with accessing the text’s e-content. Hence, I am upgrading my product rating from one star to four stars…with one star removed for both the topic presentation style and my intial very frustrating attempts to resolve the e-content issue with Inkling Customer Service as detailed above.

My favorite medical book
July 4, 2015

Purchased it a month ago, and reading it everyday. I am a FNP working at internal medicine / urgent care setting. It covers major chief complaints and medical problems that PCPs encounter frequently, or at some point of the time in one’s career. This new edition came out last year, but you can access updated information using Inkling. This book is in my bag all the time using it at work and reading it after work at home. I hope portable format of the book published in future. Great contents and readability. Strongly recommended to any PCPs.

Buy the hard copy version

Material of the text is very well-written and informative; however, the Kindle version is incredibly difficult to navigate. If your professor assigns readings by page number, then the Kindle version will be especially exasperating as it is not laid out by pages. The text formats itself to your screen, if you search for something, the layout of the text changes for that item to be the first thing on your screen. Of course, you’ll probably want to read the rest of the sentence that item is in, so when you scroll back a page, the text again reformats itself to its typical ordering, thus losing the item you are trying to read about.
Searching for items is annoying in general. 1. You have to type it out exactly as it is found in the book. An error of a letter will yield no results. 2. Results aren’t shown by chapter topic which would be helpful; they’re just shown in the context of the sentence, which is often not enough to discern where you should start.
The graphics given in the text cannot be expanded to a full page. I have no idea why. I tried even messing with sizing of the fonts to see if it would increase graphics but it actually made them smaller. Many of these graphics have incredibly small text and there is no way to increase their size, not even through my laptop zooming (which you can’t do while in Kindle).
Also, while in Kindle, you can’t minimize the Kindle window, so that you can use it while using another program. This would be awesome to be able to do while taking notes on Word and reading the text on Kindle, but there is no way to do so. Instead you have to toggle in and out of Kindle to get to Word. Ugh.
Kindle allows you to bookmark items, but just as in search, they are not organized in any way except where they are found in the text. Plus, there’s no way to label the bookmark with something helpful to you as to why you bookmarked it in the first place. It is labeled by what happens to be the first few words of text on the page you bookmarked. Pretty useless.
Kindle also allows you to highlight a word for it’s definition, this is sometimes really helpful, but most medical terms are unknown to dictionary.com, the source of the definitions.
The book, in general, is very poorly laid out. The same topic is scattered throughout the book. For instance, there may be three chapters about diabetes, but they are not lumped together as would seem appropriate. Instead there’s a diagnosis chapter, then five chapters later a management chapter, and so on. It’s weird. And since, in the digital version, the only way to see this is by going back to the Table of Contents, which in itself is around 10 screens of options, finding topics becomes incredibly cumbersome.
I recommend the material of this text but not the digital version. The only helpful features of Kindle are being able to highlight text and leave comments in the text, but, guess what, you can do that on the paper version and they would be much easier to find.

Ein super Werk für den (Haus)arzt!
Reviewed in Germany on February 28, 2017

Bin begeistert.

Updated and balanced – exactly what you need to know. The new design and layout have – IMHO – markedly improved the learning experience as compared to the previous edition.
A must for residents and specialists in family medicine.
