Raising Good Humans PDF -“A wise and fresh approach to mindful parenting.”
—Tara Brach, author of Radical Acceptance

A kinder, more compassionate world starts with kind and compassionate kids. In Raising Good Humans, you’ll find powerful and practical strategies to break free from “reactive parenting” habits and raise kind, cooperative, and confident kids.

Whether you’re running late for school, trying to get your child to eat their vegetables, or dealing with an epic meltdown in the checkout line at a grocery store—being a parent is hard work! And, as parents, many of us react in times of stress without thinking—often by yelling. But what if, instead of always reacting on autopilot, you could respond thoughtfully in those moments, keep your cool, and get from A to B on time and in one piece?

With this book, you’ll find powerful mindfulness skills for calming your own stress response when difficult emotions arise. You’ll also discover strategies for cultivating respectful communication, effective conflict resolution, and reflective listening. In the process, you’ll learn to examine your own unhelpful patterns and ingrained reactions that reflect the generational habits shaped by your parents, so you can break the cycle and respond to your children in more skillful ways.

When children experience a parent reacting with kindness and patience, they learn to act with kindness as well—thereby altering generational patterns for a kinder, more compassionate future. With this essential guide, you’ll see how changing your own “autopilot reactions” can create a lasting positive impact, not just for your kids, but for generations to come.

An essential, must-read for all parents—now more than ever.

“To raise the children we hope to raise, we have to learn to become the person we hoped to be…. This wonderful book will help you handle the ride.”

Seattlemom “I almost gave it four stars. This book has some very good and practical tips for young or inexperienced parents, or those who have not heard of mindfulness. However, for more experienced parents (more than two children or parents of teens), or parents with children of special needs, it isn’t that helpful, as most of the advice is intuitive and not in-depth or specific enough for uniquely challenging behaviors.”

Andi D “One of my biggest challenges as a parent has been dealing with my own childhood “stuff” and trying to minimize the impact of my upbringing on how I now parent my own children. I’ve come so far but have continued to feel bad about the almost automatic reactions I have to my kids sometimes, both internal and external. This book has helped me understand that, not only am I NORMAL for having those feelings, but also that there’s so much I can do to manage my triggers and reactions and improve my connection with my kids. Life changing!!

This book is comforting and immensely readable, containing insights, personal stories, and strategies to practice. Divided into two sections, 1. Break the Cycle of Reactivity and 2. Raising Kind, Confident Kids, the author gives us two different angles from which to practice improving our relationships with our children (and, I found, with ourselves! )

I loved this book and highly recommend it!”

Joe Fairchild “As a mother and parental mental health clinician, I highly value growth and thus spend great amounts of time reading parenting materials. Most are good, and generally helpful, however Raising Good Humans was extraordinary! What I love most about Hunter’s approach is that she introduces readers to the oh so important biochemistry of the brain under stress while offering a compassionate framework to guide parents through specific exercises to retrain our brains. Of all the parenting books on my nightstand at home and desk in my counseling office, Raising Good Humans has already become a quick favorite. I will be sharing this book with every parent or parent to be! I’ve already purchased multiple copies and am happy to say a good friend just received a copy as a baby shower gift.”
Erica Cowell “Hunter has the science to make you want to try to be a better parent. Stop the shaming and really connect with your kids. Make yourself a better person so you stop losing it with your kids and start relating to them. Understand why your three year old is crying because you have her the blue cup instead of the green. Have a better relationship with your teen who rolls their eyes at everything you say. It’s not magic overnight but it does make things a bit less chaotic and everyone is less likely to say I hate you.”
fawn goodberry “I’m about halfway through this book and am really loving it!! I’ve read a few other parenting books that give you a kind of common sense view of what happens when children dont listen or are having tantrums etc but I never really found them to give actual tools to help stay calm and effectively communicate or get your kids to listen. This book really digs deep into how our brains function and react, and how parenting g can really trigger stress and old trauma. Not only that but the author gives many detailed explanations and exercises help parents stay calm, communicate better, and really become more effective and present parents. I think this book could really help anyone in many aspects of their lives, not just parents!!”
