LARA1407 “I was considering using this book for a course since Aberth has written many books on the plague. Initially I was impressed, because the author took on many issues relating to the Black Death and challenged them — from the map of the spread to the role of physicians and priests, to the nature of the disease (though that was decided some time ago after the excavation of catastrophic plague pits). But I had the sense he hurried to get this book out in 2020 to coincide with COVID, because the writing is dense and often difficult and includes plague outbreaks from the initial one of 1347-53 through to the 16th century. And if it is difficult for me, I know my students wouldn’t read it. Finally, I take strong exception to his revisionist view of the Flagellants, first expressed in the 2nd ed. of his short sourcebook on the plague. Describing the movement as a theatrical and liturgical ritual and minimizing its effects on Jews in Europe is not only not convincing but also insulting (and based on one flimsy bit of evidence in contrast to numerous chronicles). Sadly, while I will retain many of the novel aspects of the book in my teaching, I cannot assign this book for a course.

It will probably be useful for graduate students, but needs a thorough and thoughtfully reconsidered second edition that is written in a more accessible style.”

M. Cott “This book was written by the most distinguished historian of the Black Plague, which struck Europe in 1347-1348 and remained endemic until the late 17th century. The author provides a definitive scientific account of the biological and historical aspects of this bacterial infection as it blazed its way through Italy and Europe, resulting in the deaths of up to 2/3 of the population in many areas. The resulting low population has been held responsible for a rise in wages to the survivors and a subsequent improvement in the overall economy of western Europe. Excellent postscripts/appendices lay to rest various misconceptions. A truly masterful piece of historical reckoning.”
Brian OGorman “This author is a member of POW VT, therefore his perspective is biased in any scholarly writing. As such I would not read it or purchase it. Sorry John, that’s the way Brenna dictates events.”
John Aberth “This is the best book available on the Black Death of the late Middle Ages.”
