Features of The Invention of Wings PDF

Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world. The Invention of Wings PDF

Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love.

As the stories build to a riveting climax, Handful will endure loss and sorrow, finding courage and a sense of self in the process. Sarah will experience crushed hopes, betrayal, unrequited love, and ostracism before leaving Charleston to find her place alongside her fearless younger sister, Angelina, as one of the early pioneers in the abolition and women’s rights movements.

Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, Kidd goes beyond the record to flesh out the rich interior lives of all of her characters, both real and invented, including Handful’s cunning mother, Charlotte, who courts danger in her search for something better.

This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved.

VINE VOICE
A Half Imaginary Flight
June 13, 2016

The story begins in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 1800’s on Sarah Grimke’s 11th birthday in which she is given Handful as her very own slave. Sarah wants no part of this and tries to return Handful but is refused and reprimanded. The two become friends, not exactly best friends, but they like each other well enough and Sarah teaches Handful to read and write, a crime during that time period. The novel continues with Sarah narrating one chapter and Handful the next. Sarah is smart and ambitious but her parents soon make clear she will do nothing but marry well and that is all a woman can expect.

Handful’s mother, Charlotte, is a prominent character in this story as well. She is a very talented seamstress and she makes a story quilt which details the story of what she had learned from her grandmother “that people in Africa used to be able to fly.” Charlotte tells Handful that her shoulder blades are all that are left of her wings but one day you will get your wings back. Charlotte further does little rebellions all the time which get her in trouble and one day she is severely punished for stealing from Mrs. Grimke.

Of course, Sarah Grimke is a well known historical abolitionist who became a Quaker; Handful is made up. Although much of the novel is the retelling of Sarah’s life, a lot of it is fiction as well. It is so well written though it will pull you in and not let go. I loved both these characters and Charlotte as well. Of course, it still breaks my heart to read how people were enslaved and how they were treated but this is truly a remarkable book which everyone should read.

Couldn’t put it down!
June 11, 2020

I stayed up way past my bedtime reading this book and finished it in two days because I literally couldn’t put it down. Sue Monk Kidd is one of my favorite authors and I can see why “The Invention of Wings” was an Oprah Book Club pick. This is an example of the best kind of historical fiction where a writer weaves believable events from her imagination against the backdrop of real historical events with heroines whose courage is formidable and inspiring.

Set in Charleston, SC, the book tells the tale of the Grimke sisters (Sarah and Angelina) who grew up in a wealthy slave holding family and challenge society’s norms by becoming influential suffragists and anti-slavery activists. Chapters alternate between Sarah’s narration and that of her slave Handful who is given to Sarah as a gift on her eleventh birthday. The friendship between these two women- one white and one black- is tense at times and I felt compassion for both of them as they their expressed their frustration about their respective places in society, especially Handful’s. Sarah wants to be a lawyer, but her father tells her that is not an option for her as a woman. Kidd also incorporates the historical figure of Denmark Vesey who organized a slave revolt in Charleston which ultimately failed, but caused blacks to be even more restricted in their movements after the white community discovered the plan.

It’s also worth mentioning that the themes in this book are eerily relevant to contemporary issues of racism and the struggles for justice that we still face today. Kidd brings these issues to light in a very accessible way.

Inspiring and Thought Provoking
July 16, 2017

This story instantly touched my heart and stayed with me long after completing it. The author was effective in bringing the main characters of Sarah and Nina Grimke back to life and bringing the predominantly fictional character of Hettie to life. As I read the story I felt as if I was living in the world of Sarah and Hettie, feeling their frustrations and struggles, fearing their future. As much as I was aware of the times of American slavery, revisiting those times from the viewpoints of Sarah and Hettie brought about new information and knowledge that made me feel for the human struggle to be free and ultimately to be truly one’s self. Though Sarah’s and Hettie’s life position contrasted clearly, they shared a strong commonality of feeling imprisoned by their world. Sarah, being solely female, could not fulfill her true passions, and Hettie, with the addition of being a slave, could not live her own life.

It wasn’t until Sarah left her environment that she was able to be the person she truly was and in the end, fearless, along with her already fearless younger sister, Nina. Through that, she was able to not only find a better ending for herself, but for Hettie.

With this said, this story was nothing short of thought provoking, as it was entertaining. Though this is a historical fiction novel, I truly believe, this will cross the interests of any reader and I actually encourage all readers to read this. With the underlying message and the main characters’ personal struggles, this story will relate to anyone, as I’m sure many, if not all, will and have gone through periods in their lives where they struggled to be fearless, to be who they truly are. A weak and uneven novel, although not without some rich sections. I’m sure my book group will have a lot to discuss
March 4, 2016

I thought the character development was superficial in many respects. The book toggled between two main characters, a slave girl who was “given” to one of the daughters, and the daughter. Each chapter was told in the first person. But actually, one of the most neglected characters in some ways was the mother, ruthless and vicious, distant from her children, and capable of extreme cruelty with the slaves on the estate. I was left curious about what could make such a woman tick. I really recommend completely restructuring this book to focus more on the other main character, the slave girl. She grew up in the household with the older daughter and I thought she was the richer character. But it was hard to tell what her inner life was like. Anyway, I thought the plot dragged at the end, and I lapsed into curiosity about the direction taken by the older daughter. That portion of the book was also relatively under-developed and at some point lacked integrity enough so that I was losing interest.
