I don’t like Belle. In fact I didn’t like her through the entire series. My feelings were changing until I came to her killing the ex coach. Sure he was bad but taking his life
was not hers to decide. There were other ways to ruin him. In fact the violence in this entire series was too much for me. I love, love a good love story but this wad just too far fetched.

A grating heroine

The premise of the story was good, the problem was the heroine’s grating personality. She was the most unlikable character in my LJ reading, which was sad, because as a feminist I love strong female characters.

This character said No when she meant Yes so often that she read like a teenage brat, rather than the 30 year old kickass female boss that she was! When 80% of a story is so annoying redemption in the last couple chapters is almost impossible.

Beautiful and unexpected ending!

I found myself pleasantly enchanted by Emmabelle and Devon. The final book in the delightful Boston bells series, The Rake brings us the story of wild child commitment phobe Emmabelle and British royal/playboy lawyer Devon. Emmabelle gets some disastrous news about her fertility and decides not to miss out on the opportunity to become a mother despite her abhorance for relationships and men. She and Devon’s paths cross in a bar where he hears her story and comes up with a solution to be her baby’s father. Having his own motivations they communicate a plan and pursue becoming parents without a relationship. Even though both hate feelings for good reasons, they can’t be denied and Emmabelle’s safety is in danger. This book did feel different from the others because it has some potentially strong triggers for readers and these characters are not all wholesome….though rightfully so. Shen knows how to suck readers into her stories and while I thought this pair may have been my least favorite before going in she quickly proved me wrong. I was so invested I finished the book in a few hours despite it being released at midnight. These characters are some of the quirkiest in the series in unexpected ways. This wouldn’t be an lj shen book without angst and she delivered on that account which is something that always draws me to her writing. There’s also steamy scenes combined with truly sweet moments that neither character would have been capable of at the beginning of the book. Reading this while pregnant was definitely a wild ride in many ways but made me connect with Emmmabelle in many ways. I loved this book and while I’m sad to see this series end, I’m so excited for a new one to begin.
