A Must for Those Facing Expat (or any other) Challenges

I have lived and worked abroad in some of the most challenging conditions which in the end turned out to be very enriching experiences. Foreign languages, political upheaval, unfamiliar social norms, I have seen it all. And as I was reading “The Role of Resiliency in a Global Lifestyle” I was asking myself – Where was this book then!!! Gelbtuch addresses the fundamentals and nuisances of navigating an expat transition supported with research and science. Her writing will give you the advice that a wise mentor would offer and accelerate your successful transition to the new environment professionally and personally. In short, you will be more prepared for the expat challenges that will certainly present themselves and be able to enjoy the adventures more deeply. In addition, I also thought the insights on the role of resiliency can be applied to many aspects of life beyond the expat experience.

As an adult TCK who was raised in Greece, Italy, and the USA. I understand first-hand the lived experiences of growing up amongst different worlds and the importance of resiliency. This short book is a valuable resource for those interested in learning more about how to build and leverage their resilience as part of the expat experience. In my work as an intercultural practitioner, global leadership coach, facilitator of learning and development programs for adults and children in international mobility, this book will most certainly be on my list of recommended resources going forward!

The Role of Resiliency in a Global Lifestyle is an excellent guide for anyone navigating the many challenges involved while immersed in a new culture. I especially liked the sections on the four stages of the Expat’s Adjustment Cycle and the three zones of thinking. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to ease the transition to their new life and appreciate alternate ways of thinking and behaving.

I am a regular follower of Cultural Mixology’s monthly newsletters, which always have excellent culture tips and fun quizzes, so I was excited to read their first eBook. I found it both concise and packed with useful information about how to move through times of change. The neuroscience aspect was particularly fascinating to me as the book talks about ways that everyone can use their brain to their advantage at any stage of life. This point alone is inspiring as we often think that as adults we are “set” in our ways for life. Definitely encourage others to read this eBook!
