Thanks for checking out my author biography! My name is Tim MacWelch and I am the author of numerous books on outdoor survival and self-reliance, including three New York Times Bestselling titles (Prepare for Anything, Hunting & Gathering Survival Manual and How To Survive Anything). I’m from Virginia, USA and I have been an active practitioner of survival and outdoor skills for over three decades. My love of the outdoors started at a young age, growing up on a farm in the rolling hills of Virginia. I became interested in survival skills and bushcraft as an offshoot of backpacking as a teen—while out in remote areas, it seemed like a smart plan to learn some skills. The majority of my training over the years has involved testing survival skills and devising new ones, but my biggest leaps forward came from my experience as a teacher.

I began teaching children in 1995, spending hundreds of hours volunteering, and eventually founded my own year-round survival school in 1997. Since then, I have worked with Boy Scouts, youth groups, summer camps, and adults in all walks of life, as well as providing outdoor skills training for numerous personnel in law enforcement, search and rescue organizations, all branches of the United States Armed Forces, the State Department, and the Department of Justice and some of its agencies. I have been a featured expert for CNN, Good Morning America and several National Geographic programs, and featured in many publications including Conde Nast Traveler, the Washington Post, and American Survival Guide.

Tim MacWelch “For those who have commented on our antifreeze tip – I thank you so much for your concern for the environment and our companion animals. I know for a fact that everyone involved in the production of this book loves their pets (and yours too), and we want every one of them to be safe and happy. The section that seems to be creating confusion for a few people is a section on leaving your home vacant and without heat for the winter. There I recommend using antifreeze or rubbing alcohol in the toilet to keep it from freezing and shattering. I stand by my statement, as my family has used this trick successfully for years. It’s important to note that there are several brands of pet-safe and environmentally safe antifreeze on the market. Additionally, the book was very clear that this technique is for an unoccupied home – so no pets should have access to these treated toilets. Since this book was written with the intention of safely guiding you through winter, it would be beneficial for readers to hear how the book fared as a survival guide and rated accordingly.

realrealsofty “A thicker paperback cover than I was expecting. Full of interesting tips and tricks, lots of illustrations and nice winter photography. A great gift idea for any outdoors person that’s hard to buy for, or a parent, or basically anyone who lives in Canada! Some of the things you read in here could really come in handy in an emergency or when facing a tough winter drive – so who knows, it could really help you or someone else out someday!”

Information is well organized and presented in a wandering bullet style in a fully laminated binding (which means it’s more or less waterproof so you can pack it for quick reference in the field). It is a little larger than, say, the SAS field guide, and it doesn’t cover quite as much ground, but it wins points for being more readable and easily referenced on the spot.”

Some repetitive information but in a way was needed – Common sense stuff that should be understood straight away, but I think this is why it’s explained differently.
