For fans of Caitlin Doughty, Mary Roach, Kathy Reichs, and CSI shows, a renowned forensic scientist on death and mortality.

Dame Sue Black is an internationally renowned forensic anthropologist and human anatomist. She has lived her life eye to eye with the Grim Reaper, and she writes vividly about it in this book, which is part primer on the basics of identifying human remains, part frank memoir of a woman whose first paying job as a schoolgirl was to apprentice in a butcher shop, and part no-nonsense but deeply humane introduction to the reality of death in our lives. It is a treat for CSI junkies, murder mystery and thriller readers, and anyone seeking a clear-eyed guide to a subject that touches us all.

Cutting through hype, romanticism, and cliché, she recounts her first dissection; her own first acquaintance with a loved one’s death; the mortal remains in her lab and at burial sites as well as scenes of violence, murder, and criminal dismemberment; and about investigating mass fatalities due to war, accident, or natural disaster, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. She uses key cases to reveal how forensic science has developed and what her work has taught her about human nature.

Acclaimed by bestselling crime writers and fellow scientists alike, All That Remains is neither sad nor macabre. While Professor Black tells of tragedy, she also infuses her stories with a wicked sense of humor and much common sense.

Top reviews

Disappointed because I expected science, not an author waxing poetic about her thoughts, beliefs, and life experiences. This has too much feels and associated filler, because IMHO, it’s an autobiography/memoir w free-floating blather about meditation and/or various philosophical ramblings. It took me a long time to finish this book.

The audiobook is no better than the Kindle version. In many ways, it was worse, because the blathering is more annoying when narrated.

When reading this review, please keep in mind that I was expecting to read about forensic sciences, and I’m amongst the minority of reviewers.

I’m in my mid 70’s and in reasonably good health, but at my age death is certainly on the horizon and something I am planning for. For that reason, and because of the mostly good reviews, I thought this book might give me some insight or perspective on how to approach, interpret and plan for the final rodeo. The author spent a great deal of time, and chapters, talking about her relationships with her family, father, mother, uncle, but mostly her grandmother, who have all passed away. What she did, what she didn’t do, how she felt, what she thought at the time, what she would do different, etc, etc. Obviously, very important to her, but why are her experiences supposed to be important to the reader? She didn’t have any particular special insights that I could discern. Any of us who’ve lived to be 60 would have similar experiences with different feelings and emotions, all of them equally valid. I couldn’t understand why her personal situation was relevant to me as a reader. It went on and on to the point when I was 36% of the way through the book I skipped to last 3 chapters thinking there might be some special insight or conclusion that would be enlightening. Nope, pretty much the same. Based on the reviews I’m one of the few who didn’t care for the book, but I would suggest reading some excerpts and deciding for yourself before purchasing.
Absolutely absorbing! You must read this book. Fascinating account of death by someone with enormous experience in this field. I don’t wish to repeat the previous review, but I totally agree. The author has the ability to avoid too much technical detail, has a great sense of humour and makes an often awkward subject approachable and personal. You will not be disappointed.
