V. Hutson  “To be honest, when I first got this book I was both overwhelmed and a bit disappointed. My first reaction was “there is too much to read, I just want a book that quickly states what I should eat for what I want to heal.” I put the book away for a couple days–but then I started looking through it and actually reading it! My attitude immediately changed. While this book has a lot of pages and looks more scholarly than I was hoping for–the author has written it in a way that is easily understandable, interesting, and most important helpful! I felt embarrassed that my first response to the book was that it had too many pages and that I didn’t want to read so much.

I did find the pages that list the foods that should be eaten depending on which of the five defense systems you are interested in. They are in charts near the back of the book in Appendix A. The five systems are: Angiogenesis (blood vessels and circulation), Regeneration (stem cells), Microbiome (healthy bacteria), DNA Protection (I didn’t know this was even possible), and Immunity. The chapters for each of these areas goes in depth explaining why. I actually found this information very interesting when I actually started reading it!

The book is divided into three main parts. Part One explains each of the body’s natural defense systems. Part Two is on what to eat to beat disease. Part Three is on planning, choosing, and acting. It includes topics such as the 5 x 5 x 5 framework the author has created that makes it easy to incorporate these foods. It also has a chapter on “Exceptional Foods” and “Sample Meal Guide and Recipes.”

If you are looking for information on what to eat to help our body’s natural defense system this book should be one of the top ones you consider!”

Cheryl “Although the book does explain how angiogenesis works, and how the microbiome is very important to overall health, the gist of the book is to eat more vegetables, fruits, and fermented foods. He recommends to do this 5 times daily and your body will have the tools it needs to repair itself.

What if you cannot eat fermented foods? I have a dairy allergy AND a mold allergy, so that leaves me out for healing my SIBO (bacterial overgrowth), which he does not even mention. Nor can I cure my food allergies, my thyroid or my insulin resistance. I cannot drink wine without getting a headache, same with chocolate. And a zillion books on state to eat a more plant-based diet, less sugar and less meat. To quote him, “There is a way to boost our own defense systems so the body will heal itself”, yet he also says “There is no silver bullet for any one disease”.

I started with the Nourishing Traditions book over 20 years ago so none of the advice was new to me. I did find the angiogenesis section interesting, but he says if you are on a Paleo diet or a Keto diet, just include more healthy foods from the list which is mostly plant-based.”

Matt Morgan “There are a large number of diet books around, espousing a variety of “healthy” lifestyles, and often these are unsustainable over the long term either for financial or health reasons. Many look at such factors as calories, fat, carbohydrates and more without really considering the foods themselves beyond that. This book isn’t a diet book, per se; instead, it looks at the individual foods and explains how the body uses them to heal and regenerate itself.

To cut to the chase on one important point: the focus is very much on natural, unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts and fish. There is a definite lack of coverage for land-based meats (beef, pork, lamb) though there is discussion of various types of seafood such as tuna, anchovies, clams and more, and chicken/turkey are also covered.

This is not a formal diet book; rather, it is more of a field guide to foods that help your body in several key areas: angiogenesis, regeneration, microbiome, DNA protection and immunity. Each of these get a dedicated chapter on what they are, how tending to them is important and how you can give your body the tools it needs to fight off diseases and heal itself. At the end of the book there is a set of large tables, one for each of these aspects of your health, and the author advises to eat at least one serving of something from each table every day. Interestingly, the book does not advocate eating only things on the lists, but instead says to make sure that these are added to the regular diet.

Some of the material regarding specific foods I have seen before, such as the antioxidant properties of certain fruits, good fat content of others and so on, but much of what is here is new to me. What this book does is consolidate a lot of information into one handy reference. I did not know what fiddleheads were until I found out about them in this book, after which I was able to get corroborating information online.

I am still working my way through this book and I am learning a lot as I go, but so far I have been very encouraged with what I have seen and read. This is a different approach to health, not focused on weight management and counting calories, but instead focusing on how your body uses different foods to heal, rebuild and defend itself.”
