The Authors

The Carpet Cipher PDF By Jane Thornley

Jane Thornley has been creating stories forever, or for at least as far back as she can remember. She recalls telling her elementary school buddies all about an amazing flying horse she kept in her closet that she’d take for rides when nobody was looking. Though her friends loved the stories (and were waiting for a ride), the adults were not so amused. After that, it didn’t take long for her to sort out the difference between writing fiction and telling lies but the experience shaped her life from that point on.

Now, as an adult, she’s lived many lives: English teacher, professional librarian, travel host, collaborator in a software company, a knitwear designer, and a superintendent of schools, but she considers “author” to be her default position. She lives nestled by a river in Nova Scotia and travels the world with her husband gleaning inspiration for her books.

Her passions are many and they find their way into her novels time and again. As long as she has readers, she’ll give them stories, whether they involve airborne horses or not.

Jane is the author of two multi-book series beginning with Crime by Design which begins with Warp in the Weave and finishes with the Plunge. A spin-off series, The Agency of the Ancient Lost & Found, launches with the best selling The Carpet Cipher and moves on to The Crown That Lost its Head. The Florentine’s Secret is due in September 2021.

What readers are saying about the Crime by Design series:

“If book one in this series wasn’t enough to prove Thornley’s talent (and it was) then book two would have sealed the deal anyway. These books are fabulously paced–gripping with intrigue from the onset and building in suspense and action as the story continues to one earth-shattering conclusion.” From Book Crazy, Top 500 reviewers

Disappointing

I started to read this book full of pleasant expectations. As I read, I encountered vast references to characters, events, and plot details that I was unaware of. Wouldn’t it have been nice if the description of this book contained the info that there were other “Phoebe” books that preceded this one? Now I’m annoyed. I don’t want to read the previous ones for this one to make sense. And now I don’t want to wade through this one. Note to marketing department: You missed the boat.

I really like this book.
I think I’d like it better if I had read the other stories first. There was a lot of referring to past events that I didn’t have the background knowledge of. It certainly was capable of standing alone but it would have helped to have understood the relationships in this book better if I had read the books that came before this one.

I also think there were parts where it dragged just a little bit.

Overall though, the characters were fun and interesting. The story was in a nice location that was well described and brought back memories of Venice for me. The plot was also twisty enough and the ending was not exactly as I anticipated so that was lovely.

A different type of story.

I liked the use of textiles and history as a basis for the story. I thought it was a stand alone mystery, but is part of a series. The author does try to read you into the current storyline, but I was still a little lost. Maybe if I had read the previous stories I would not have found the backstory a little tedious at times. Maybe this is a better video story than book story.

Meh..(spoilers)

What a waste of a good plot! I finished this book by sheer, dogged willpower. For starters, the treasure was supposed to be something that united religions, but was instead a box of polished rocks. Wth?! Second, aside from Evan and Phoebe, all of the characters are woefully underused. They basically serve as background chatter lest the book consist solely of Phoebe mooning after Noel like an absolute moron. I had to start skipping pages because she was making me so mad. Noel is CLEARLY a bad guy and literally everyone in the story knows it but her. Phoebe. Is. An. Idiot. Finally, the “twists” were so predictable. It just wasn’t a great book. It’s not even a good book. I gave it 2 stars for potential and the occasional humor, but I would have been upset had I spent money on this book.

This is a very engrossing story!

I did not like the beginning of this book. There were so many references to situations the main character had been through in the past that I had to look to make sure this was the first book in the series. This made it very annoying. But once it got into the present story it was very engrossing. I haven’t spent a whole day reading a book in a long time and I couldn’t put this one down. Can’t wait to start Book 2 in the series!

Textile mystery
June 20, 2020

While this book is part of a series, it is not necessary to have read the previous volumes as enough background is supplied during the narrative. It is pleasant to have a mystery based on textiles rather than paintings for a change. And throwing in a sidekick who is an engineer adds a little architecture to the mixture. This is a touch above a classic Agatha Christie.
