This book should be required reading for anyone concerned about the future of American Democracy. Dr. Trump does a superb task of reviewing the history and politics that have brought us to the current situation. The following is a paragraph from this brilliant text that outlines what needs to be conveyed to Trump supporters.
If you are white in America and feel you have been left behind and shut out of the prosperity afforded to others, it’s not because of Black people and immigrants. It’s because the politicians you continue to vote for stoke your bigotry and sense of grievances while exploiting your ignorance in order to keep you exactly where you are Disempowered, angry, and fearful.

According to the subtitle, author, Mary L. Trump, wrote this book for the purpose of “Finding a Way to Heal”, at least partially. Hhhhmmm…
“The Reckoning” reads much more like an history book. It starts with the history of slavery but Trump has joined the CRT bandwagon and begins in 1865 and runs thru Jim Crow in 1965. After pointing to all those who are wrong in these highlighted events she moves on to discuss Uncle Donald. Let’s make this simple and summarize by saying she says he did nothing right and most was trauma inducing.
After the quick diatribe on Donald, M. L. Trump goes back to issues facing Black Americans focusing on white supremacy and all it’s historical manifestations. These take us right up to present day where she takes on all the contemporary Republicans.
Now it’s time for the summary, the healing part. M. L. Trump is a professional and I expected something more than the quips we’ve been hearing in the media for months, even years. That didn’t happen which brings me right back to my headline: WHY???
There is absolutely nothing new here. If you want or need an history lesson on slavery or CRT, this one is at least literate. It’s also completely anti DLT, unabashedly biased and offers little in the way of how to find healing that you haven’t already heard ad nauseum. Chances are you will be making offering$ to the author via the purchase of her personal cathar$i$ 📚

Excellent distillation of the shameful history we didn’t learn in high school. A look in the mirror is due, as Dr. Trump succinctly points out. This is a must read for all Americans in order for us to keep this great country and the Democracy it is supposed to represent.

“The Reckoning: Our National Trauma and Finding a Way to Heal” by Mary L. Trump would be a valuable book under any circumstances, but I consider it to be doubly powerful because of the honesty, integrity, and knowledge of the author. Having already read and reviewed her previous analysis of her uncle, the former president, I already knew about the authenticity and insight this uniquely qualified author brings to her analyses. Indeed, in my review of “Too Much and Never Enough”, published on on October 29, 2020, I said: “The author deserves the highest possible accolade for daring to tell this story; may it help to ‘save our nation’, as she sincerely hopes!” This new book goes deeply into an analysis of why and how we came to elect Donald Trump to the presidency in the first place, and what our future will be if we don’t face up to some very painful realities and deal with the necessity for some extremely radical cures.
Although I don’t often quote books extensively in my reviews, I have a long series of bookmarks on my Kindle for this one. It is hard to choose a single one, but I will offer an example of the cogent insight I believe this author displays. While discussing the absurdity of the white supremacy ethos which manifests so painfully in our present time, she says:
“The terrible irony is that white supremacy demanded that Blacks be excluded from society, despite their desire to be fully integrated, while Native Americans, who wanted nothing more than the return of their land and their sovereignty, were forced to assimilate, no matter what it cost them.”
This book is an anguished but determined soul-cry of a person who sees clearly what is needed, and has the astounding courage to say it as passionately and authentically as it can possibly be said.
